Piraeus

Piraeus is the biggest port in Europe and the third busiest port in the world. It is located 9 km south-west of the centre of Athens and is a city in its own right with a population of 175, 697 inhabitants. In medieval times Piraeus was known as Porto Leone thanks to the huge statue of a lion which guarded the entrance of the port. Piraeus today consists of three main areas: the central harbour and the harbours of Zea and Mikrolimano. The latter two tend to be of more interest to tourists as they are both picturesque and dotted with restaurants and shops while the central harbour is where you can see the hub of cargo and passenger ships.
